Packaging things and mantaining services

Synopsis

As a part of the second phase of FSF camp 2020 would like to work on two project proposals - Priority : Debian packaging > Sysadministration (I would still like to be a part of the sessions here)

  • Debian Packaging
    • Currently dont have any specific packages in mind but I would like to learn how this works and package some small things as a part of the camp
  • System administration ie deploying and mantaing free software services
    • As a part of this I would like to setup a cryptpad instance for fsci at something like pads.fsci.in and mantain it if we have enough server space .
    • Cryptpad doesnt really require that much ram for itself and works in a docker container as well . For example I run my own instance on a server with just 1 gb of ram which serves a bunch of other things as well

Benefits to the community

  • Debian Packaging

    • Couple of more things would be available as a debian package atleast in my own repository if not the official ones
  • System administration ie deploying and mantaing free software services

    • We could switch over a lot more people from guggal docs if we had a cryptpad instance as well
    • I could help mantain our existing services as well such as git.fosscommunity.in or meet.fsci.in or work on cryptpad

Deliverables

  • Debian Packaging

    • Maybe a couple of debian packages or a single one and maybe adopt a package looking for love in another contributors repositories
  • System Administration

    • A working cryptpad instance with regular updates and mantainence from yours truly
    • A new backup mantainer of any of our existing services

Biographical Information

  • I am a second year student from Delhi who likes to play around with computers and learn more about them
  • I interned at sflc.in as a syadmin for about 6 months

  • Regarding my projects I have done some Arch packaging before but that was just for the AUR and not in the main repos
  • I selfhost some things for myself to move away from proprietary SaaS
    • pad.manav.co.in --> My cryptpad instance
    • cloud.manav.co.in --> My nextcloud
    • media.manav.co.in ---> My jellyfin server I also host some internal things and services just for myself for example
