FSCI PROJECT

Name

Ayesha Gohar

Title

Visualizing and updating Wikidata about Wiki Contributors and Indian Education.

Proposal Status

Proposal Status: Draft

Synopsis

There are two main objectives of the proposed project. Firstly, to visualize the Wiki Contributors based on their Geographical location, Gender and Occupation. Secondly, to update open datasets related to Indian education from non wikidata sources to wikidata and then visualize the available data.

Benefits to Community

Data visualization gives us a clear idea of what the information means by giving it visual context through maps or graphs. Currently the Wikidata Query Service is somewhat complex for a non-tech person and lacks advanced and elegant visualization techniques that are more accessible for commons. Therefore, through this small project I propose to visualize wikidata about the wiki contributors and wiki items about Education. While the data on these two categories may be useful for the larger wiki community, the advanced data visualizations will provide an exemplar/prototype to enhance wikidata visualization to become more usable by commons.

Deliverables

  • To query or access wikidata based on wikidata contributors or wikidata editors using linked data interface or SPARQL endpoint.

    Subtask :

    • Learn SPARQL
  • Visualize the selected data through graphs, maps or charts by using various methods such as R programming,D3 and many more.

  • To research about the available open data about Indian education. Some examples of open data sources are mentioned below.

    • Data.gov.in : https://data.gov.in/
    • Our world in data: https://ourworldindata.org/
  • Another milestone of the proposed project is to update the dataset to wikidata. Visualize the new updated data using R or D3.
